The Castle Spa uses two of its own springs, the Upper and Lower Castle Spring.
Upper and Lower Castle Spring (55°C)
Practically it is one spring, which is led into two vases. However, due to the higher altitude of the upper spring and physical laws, the Upper Castle Spring has a different temperature and CO2 content than its lower variant. The Lower Castle Spring is brought to the Market Colonnade for public use. The spring in the Castle Colonnade is intended only for clients of Castle Spa.
Thermal springs and their effects
Already the first settlers of the valleys and forests around the Teplá River knew the healing effects of the thermal mineral waters flowing here. They were given magical power, and even Charles IV himself, who in 1370 elevated the village to a town, tried it out. It is said that he relieved his sore feet in the warm springs.
The underground of Karlovy Vary is interwoven with countless springs, some of which are captured on the surface and made accessible to the public. 15 springs, of which 12 are commonly used for drinking cures, which are integral parts of the renowned Karlovy Vary spa treatment. Each of the 15 springs differ in the temperature of the source and the amount of dissolved carbon dioxide, these differences being decisive for the effects on humans themselves. The most famous spring is the 1st Karlovy Vary Thermal Mineral Spring (Vřídlo), which rises in the Hot Spring Colonnade and is cooled and diverted into five spring vases for drinking purposes.
